Can a Worm Gearbox Be Used with a Servo Motor?

  1.  Precision Mismatch: Not Suitable for Combined Use


Standard worm gearboxes have significant backlash, resulting in positioning errors that far exceed the precision standards of servo motors. The primary advantages of a servo motor—high precision, fast response, and high rigidity—are completely negated when paired with such a gearbox. This combination fails to meet the requirements of high-precision transmission applications and results in a waste of the servo motor's performance capabilities.


  1. Significant Noise and Heat Generation, Obvious Speed Conflicts


Worm gearboxes are known for generating substantial noise and heat, requiring strict lubrication and cooling measures. Their typically permissible input speed does not exceed 1500 rpm. In contrast, the rated speed of common servo motors is generally 3000 rpm. This significant speed discrepancy, if the servo motor runs at its rated speed, will accelerate wear, heat generation, and noise, compromising equipment stability and shortening its operational lifespan.


  1.  Self-Locking Function Can Be Replaced by Servo Brake


Many users choose worm gearboxes primarily for their self-locking capability to prevent load dropping (e.g., in vertical axes or inclined mechanisms). However, a servo motor equipped with a brake can fully replace this function. It can directly lock the shaft and secure the load after a power failure, meeting safety requirements while offering better compatibility with the overall servo system, thus eliminating the need for a worm gearbox.


  1.  Flange Size Compatibility Issues


Currently, most worm gear reducers available on the market are designed to be paired with three-phase induction motors. Consequently, there are few standard models with flange dimensions that directly match standard AC servo motors. However, if a customer has such a requirement, we can customize the relevant flange dimensions.


  1.  Practical Application Notes


While a worm gearbox can be physically connected to a servo motor, considering the overall performance, precision, and service life, this is not an ideal combination and is not recommended for standard applications.
