Recommended PWM Frequency Values for Brushless Drive Speed Control

Setting the PWM frequency of a brushless drive between 10 kHz and 16 kHz is the optimal choice for achieving stable speed, low noise, and balanced heat generation.

This range represents a "sweet spot" that delivers the best overall balance among multiple key performance factors:

  • Compared to lower frequencies (e.g., 1 kHz - 8 kHz): It significantly reduces motor noise and vibration, resulting in smoother current flow and directly improving speed stability.
  • Compared to higher frequencies (e.g., above 20 kHz): It effectively controls the drive's switching losses, preventing excessive heat buildup and ensuring long-term system reliability.

You can refer to the following scenarios to select a specific frequency value:

  • Pursuing Ultimate Smoothness: Prioritize 16 kHz. It provides the smoothest current and minimal torque ripple, making it suitable for precision control applications.
  • General Balanced Choice: A frequency between 12 kHz and 14 kHz is recommended. This offers the best compromise between stability, noise, and temperature rise, and is suitable for the vast majority of automation equipment.
  • Focusing on Heat Dissipation & Efficiency: 10 kHz can be chosen. It ensures performance significantly better than lower frequencies while minimizing drive heating as much as possible.

Suggestion:

In your system, you can begin testing with 14 kHz as a starting point, then fine-tune based on your specific emphasis on smoothness or temperature management.
